The Dangers of Cheap Web Design

Who doesn’t love a good deal? Every business is on the search for a great bargain when it comes to spending money. In fact, there’s nothing wrong with finding the best and cheapest option out there to get you what you need. And this is very true with web design as well.

Website design is a difficult service to stamp a price on. Every website is different, and a unique website should be customized to your company’s brand and identity. So how can you tell whether a website design quote is too good to be true, too expensive, or just right for you? Unfortunately, this is a question that only you can answer yourself, because you’re the one who knows what you need, and what your budget is.

But one thing for sure is that when you’re given a cheap website design service, there are usually several areas of concern that you need to consider before moving forward. At CryoDragon, a large number of our clients are those that already had websites that were made at a very low cost. However, as time passed, their website couldn’t be updated, there was no support, and they didn’t show up on popular search engines. In the end, the money they spent was lost as they had to hire another web designer and spend more on a website that was done the right way.

So what are the dangers of cheap website design? First of all, cheap website design is usually a poorly-designed, template-driven site with barely any customization and minimal functionality. That means that a template is chosen and your logo and content would be added in. You’ll need to see if additional customizations to help make your site unique are included (colour and content layout), whether the site will be responsive, and whether calls-to-action and user experience are incorporated into the design. If not, then you’re paying for something you could easily do yourself by purchasing a theme ($20-100) and setting it up yourself.

Next, if you don’t have a lot of time, a really important factor to consider is support. Support is almost always lacking when you opt for a cheap website. Once the website designer has completed your site, they’re gone and onto their next client. So when you encounter problems with your site, the chances of getting support or follow-up help will pretty much be zilch. That’s why having a full-time web professional working for you is always preferred versus someone who just wants to make a quick buck.

And what if your website needs an update in the future? Will you be left high and dry? Ongoing updates rarely come with cheap website design. Without the latest version of your website theme and plugins, you’re running the risk of having outdated, unsafe, and unreliable versions of the tools, software and themes that run your website.

Finally, cheap websites offer little to no search engine optimization or analytics. A good website designer will be able to optimize each component of your website so that the entire site is search-engine friendly. Cheap website designs will just install an SEO plugin, enter some keywords, and be done with it. This isn’t something you want when it comes to your business’ online search ranking!
